Magnitude 6.7 quake strikes off Davao Occidental
A magnitude 6.7 quake hit at a depth of 94 kilometers about 183 kilometers southeast of Balut Island in Sarangani town at around 4:48 a.m.

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the waters off Davao Occidental early Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported. 

The quake hit at a depth of 94 kilometers about 183 kilometers southeast of Balut Island in Sarangani town at around 4:48 a.m.

Phivolcs said it did not trigger a tsunami alert, and damage and aftershocks are not expected. 

The quake was initially registered at magnitude 7.1 before Phivolcs revised the data.

According to Phivolcs, instrumental intensities were recorded in the following areas:

  • Intensity IV (moderately strong) - Malungon, Alabel, Kiamba, and Glan in Sarangani
  • Intensity III (weak) - Korona Tupi, and T'boli in South Cotabato; Malapatan in Sarangani; Nabunturan in Davao de Oro; Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental; Digos City in Davao del Sur; Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental
  • Intensity II (slightly felt) - Banga, Norala, Lake Sebu, Santo Niño, Tantangan, and Tampakan in South Cotabato; Maitum and Malungon in Sarangani; Columbio, President Quirino, Lambayong, Lebak, and Esperanza in Sultan Kudarat; Davao City; Magsaysay and Matanao in Davao del Sur; Zamboanga City; San Fernando in Bukidnon; Kidapawan City in Cotabato
  • Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) - Malaybalay, Kadilingan, and Kalilangan in Bukidnon; Banisilan, Carmen, Magpet, and President Roxas in Cotabato; Balingasag in Misamis Oriental; Bagumbayan and Isulan in Sultan Kudarat; Bislig City, Surigao del Sur

Reported intensities were the following:

  • Intensity IV (moderately strong) - Glan, Malungon, and Kiamba in Sarangani
  • Intensity III (weak) - General Santos City, Koronadal City, Tupi, Polomolok, and T’boli in South Cotabato; Alabel and Malapatan in Sarangani; Matalam in Cotabato
  • Intensity II (slightly felt) - Tampakan, Tantangan, Banga, Norala, Santo Niño, Surallah, and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato; City of Zamboanga; Maitum in Sarangani; Kidapawan City, Makilala, M'lang, Pigcawayan, Tulunan, and Kabacan in Cotabato; President Quirino in Sultan Kudarat
  • Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) - Cagayan de Oro City; Maasim in Sarangani; Arakan in Cotabato; Isulan in Sultan Kudarat
