MANILA, Philippines — Every year on January 9, millions of devotees flock the roads of Manila to celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene—the biggest religious activity in the country.

Quiapo Church officials estimated that up to five million participants are expected to take part in the annual procession, dubbed as traslacion, which brings the statue of Jesus Christ to Quiapo from Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park.

To maintain safety during the nearly 24-hour event, the Manila Police District will prohibit items such as:

  • deadly weapons
  • firearms
  • colored canisters
  • colored water jugs

The ban on the said items would start Wednesday.

For the first time, the MPD also implemented the vendor ban in Quiapo Church and along areas where the procession of the Black Nazarene would pass beginning Monday, January 7.

The liquor ban started Tuesday, while the firecracker ban would begin on January 9.
