MANILA, Philippines—More than 150 aspirants submitted their certificates of candidacy for senator before the Commission on Elections during the five-day filing period from October 11 to 17.

The Comelec said a total of 152 Senate hopefuls filed their COCs for the 2019 midterm elections. This was slightly less than the 172 who filed papers to run for senator in the 2016 polls.

The 2016 candidates was cut down to 50 final candidates in the 2016 polls.

According to Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, 131 of the Senate aspirants for the 2019 mid-term elections were men anly  only 21 were women.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez earlier noted the high turnout of COC filers citing that some political parties “made an effort to fill the 12 slots for senators.”

The Comelec closed the COC filing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The commission will then review candidates.
