Francis Tolentino files senatorial candidacy

Rosette Adel - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - Resigned Metro  Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief and former Mayor of Tagaytay City Francis Tolentino on Wednesday filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator before the Commission on Elections.

Tolentino was supposed to run under the Liberal Party (LP) but decided to run independently following the "Playgirls" issue, where scantily clad women performed in an LP gathering. He resigned from his MMDA post last week.

After the issue, he said he only seeks to focus on his plans as a senator of the country. He said he already apologized and even asked for delistment in the Liberal Party's senatorial slate.

"Tapos na siguro 'yun, we move forward. I'd like to talk on substance," Tolentino said. The former MMDA chair was accompanied by local officials from Cavite and Caloocan.

He also acknowledged President Benigno Aquino III's support for his senatorial bid despite opting out of the administration ticket.

In his legislative platforms, Tolentino mentioned that he aims to empower internal revenue allotment for local government units, create a disaster recovery agency, address problems of urbanization, engage in public international law and determine how it will affect issues concerning West Philippine Sea, among many others.

Tolentino also mentioned that his doctorate degree may contribute in debates in environmental law.
