Pinoys witness partial lunar eclipse

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - Amid cloudy skies brought about by typhoon “Ambo,” Filipinos in various parts of the country witnessed a partial lunar eclipse on Monday night.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the eclipse began at 4:46 p.m. local time. The greatest eclipse was seen at 7:03 p.m. The eclipse ended at 8:07 p.m.

Stargazers trooped to the PAGASA’s Astronomical Observatory inside the University of the Philippines in Diliman on Monday to witness the first lunar eclipse of the year.

Mario Raymundo, head of the PAGASA’s Astronomical Observatory, said 34 percent of the moon was covered by the earth’s shadow.

PAGASA said the partial lunar eclipse was also seen in the western parts of America, Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, eastern Asia, Japan and Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, the island of New Guinea, and neighboring islands in the Pacific Ocean).

A lunar eclipse happens when the earth is between the sun and the moon so that the shadow of the earth falls on the moon.
