Ken & Rita team up anew for My Special Love concert

MANILA, Philippines — “Do you miss Boyet?” was the first thing that entertainment reporters asked Ken Chan, who showed up minutes ahead of Rita Daniela in a mini-presscon held at Lola Café in Tomas Morato last Monday for the love team’s first-ever concert. Boyet was Ken’s character in GMA 7’s My Special Tatay — his afternoon series with Rita — which had its finale a few weeks ago.

“Yes, it’s true. I miss (portraying) him, especially how he speaks,” Ken said of Boyet, a young father with mild intellectual disability, whom viewers came to love and adore. In fact, the character repeatedly became a trending topic on social media.

Before avid fans will totally miss the well-loved pair of the Kapuso top-rating series, Ken and Rita will headline a concert titled My Special Love — #BoBreyinConcert on May 11, 7 p.m. at the Music Museum. #BoBrey is the uniname that fans gave the “accidental love team” of Boyet (Ken) and Aubrey (Rita) in the series.

Aside from honoring persons with disabilities, the concert is Ken and Rita’s way of expressing gratitude to those who supported them throughout the successful run of My Special Tatay.

Rita said, “I think it’s all about honoring the people who became a part of our success. We’re really excited for the people we’re going to collaborate with. Isa sa mga guests namin (ay) yung mga batang may autism and intellectual disabilities. They’re part of our success. Whatever we have right now, they’re part of it. Dapat kasama rin namin sila.”

Ken, for his part, added, “Ikukwento namin kung paano namin narating yung mga pangarap namin sa buhay through our concert and through the songs we will be performing. There will be lots of throwbacks. Malaking bahagi din dito yung mga taong may intellectual disabilities so we are inviting them to jam with us. They will also have a performance and that’s one of the highlights of our concert. Some of the proceeds of the concert will (go to) our beneficiary, which is yung mga taong may intellectual disabilities. It’s also our way of thanking them.”

Ken and Rita will treat concert-goers to “heartwarming classics and pure entertainment” with the special participation of The Clash alumni Jong Madaliday, Garrett Bolden and Anthony Rosaldo.

Rita said the concert will showcase the other side of her and Ken that people have not yet seen.

“We will have a sing-and-dance (production number) but this is different. This is more personal. Basta surprise na lang,” she said, adding that their My Special Tatay co-stars like Lilet and Candy Pangilinan will also grace the show.

Ken and Rita will have a “follow-up project soon” aside from a concert in the US come June. The Kapuso stars have also made plans on spending some much-needed time off with their respective families.

Asked about the details of the upcoming project, Ken said, “I think (it will happen) this year po but definitely kaming dalawa ulit ang magkakasama ni Rita for this new project. But honestly, we don’t know the title yet, or what kind of show it is but we have been informed na kaming dalawa ulit so we are happy about it.”

He added, “(The project) is an answered prayer after My Special Tatay. I really prayed for it but (I hope it will start) next quarter because we are still focused on our concerts here and abroad.”

The past few weeks have also kept Ken and Rita busy with their recording careers. Ken has just released his newest single 1 Like under GMA Music and it is getting heavy airplay on Barangay LS and all other Barangay FM stations nationwide. It is now available for streaming on Apple Music, iTunes and other digital stores worldwide. Directed by Miggy Tanchanco, 1 Like’s music video is also available for streaming on GMA Music’s YouTube channel (GMAMusicOfficial).

Meanwhile, Rita has also released her single Florita which she composed together with Randy Salvador. Distributed also by GMA Music, Florita is now available for streaming on digital stores worldwide.
