Quotes to ponder from movie moms

- Joy Jonette Chuyaco -

MANILA, Philippines - “Mothers know best” — well, some might say not always, but most of the time mothers just know the right thing to do. At times, they might be misunderstood but they would later be proven right. It’s just amazing how their mind works or how they manage to say the coolest things. So it’s better to remember all those pieces of advice they give because they can come in handy someday. With Mother’s Day fast-approaching, here are some quotes to ponder from movie moms.

“Life’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” — Mrs. Gump (Forrest Gump). Well, as the saying goes “Life is full of surprises.” Mrs. Gump just knows what words to use to let his son understand what she means. Just like our moms who know exactly how to say things to us.

“The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head anyway she wants.” — Mrs. Maria Portokalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). What a great advice for daughters who are married or getting married soon — just not sure if men are happy to hear this. But, I guess fathers also give some tips to their sons.

“You threaten my son, you threaten me.” — Leigh Anne Touhy (The Blind Side). This is just how protective mothers can be. They’re willing to be your shield and take the pain for as long as they can. Truly an amazing love you won’t just get anywhere.

“… and with all the numbers I gave you, I’m guessing zero is the number of times you’re gonna call it.”—Erin (Erin Brockovich). What a strong statement! Sometimes we just need to be straight forward because there are just some people who are out there to fool us or take us for granted. Remember, you’re not a game to be played.

“…Oh God, I realize as a woman how lucky I am. I was there when that wonderful creature drifted into my life and I was there when she drifted out. It was the most precious moment of my life.” — M’Lynn (Steel Magnolias). Usually, moms are the emotionally strongest in the family. They can hide their fears and sadness just to protect their family from being weak — Kudos!

“…I want my son.” — Libby (Double Jeopardy). If you separate a mother to her child, it would be like cutting her into half — incomplete. This is how Libby felt when her son was taken away from her. It was also the main reason, actually the only thing that made her strong while she was in jail. When she got her parole, there’s nothing in her mind but to get her son back.

“You know, like it or not, we’re still your family, for better or worse.” — Sheryl Hoover (Little Miss Sunshine). You may have other people in your life but your family is the best you’ll ever have because they completely accept you for who you are. So treasure them and don’t take them for granted. Be thankful!

“You’re just like  my mother — never know what you’re worth until too late.” — An-Mei (The Joy Luck Club). This is an important reminder especially to women who neglect their worth in the name of love. What usually happens is that they try to be martyrs or cover up the truth to save a relationship, forgetting to ask themselves “is it still worth it?”

“Because I said so.” — Daphne (Because I Said So). Well, sometimes asking “why?” is just not an option — just listen to your mother. More often than not, you’ll find out later that she’s right. If she’s wrong, then it must be for the best. Mothers would never put their child in danger.

“…And each day, it’s the number of times I’m thankful that there’s such a thing as family.” — Kate Baker (Cheaper by the Dozen). No matter how busy life can be for a mother, she is still thankful for her family. Just like Kate who needs to take care of her 12 children plus a husband. Being a mother can be challenging, but knowing that she has a family makes it all worth it.
