Netflix releases Matthew Perry docu series

MANILA, Philippines — The late American-Canadian actor Matthew Perry will be the subject of an upcoming documentary series on streaming platform Netflix featuring interviews of loved ones.

Emmy-winning director Mary Robertson helms the three-part series titled "The One About Matthew Perry," a reference to how "Friends" episodes were titled in which the actor appeared in over 200 of them.

The docu-series will feature never-before-heard testimonies from Perry's sister Mia Perry Bowick — a licensed psychotherapist, writer, and speaker — and his lifelong best friends as well as unreleased images from his family's private archive.

"Firsthand memories from his creative collaborators and friends who adored and supported him are woven with candid new details on his private struggles," Netflix teased.

Perry was open about his battle with addiction, and his passing in October 2023 aged 54 from an accidental overdose drew tributes from viewers who long turned to his "Friends" character Chandler Bing for a good laugh.

Robertson in a statment called the actor "one of the comedic geniuses of our time," and through his projects "made millions of us laugh, connect, and feel a little less alone."

"He also gave us so much more by bravely speaking about addiction. Yet the public only knew part of his story," the director added. "That's why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure."

Bowick acknowledged it took time to share memories of her brother and what it was like to love him amid his complexities, crediting Perry for as the person she strives to be and shaping her in the person she is now.

"Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved," she said. "I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind."

"The One About Matthew Perry" begins streaming on Netflix on October 27.
