UV Lancers maul Greywolves

CEBU, Philippines – Defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers last night scored a 91-48 demolition of the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves in a boring collegiate match of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) at the Cebu Coliseum.

Without the 6-foot-11 center Gregory Slaughter for the first time to bolster their bid for an unprecedented 10th title in a row, the Lancers were still in their usual deadly form and even their rookies are showing a lot of promise.

In fact, it was rookie forward RG Rios who topscored for the Lancers with his 16-point haul.

Jerome Silva was the other Lancer who finished in double figures with 10.

Only Airell Tirado showed some offensive prowess for the Greywolves scoring 14 points.

The Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) Wildcats, the other day, escaped with a 76-74 victory against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers.

It was the three-pointer by Christian Floyd Taboada that lifted CIT to victory, but the 32-point explosion of sophomore Chester Curso that mattered most. Fritz Dajalos, who finished with 23 points, topscored for the Panthers who could have won the game but Randy Avila bungled his point-blank lay-up on a nicely-executed play after a great escape from his defender.

While the Lancers coasted to an easy win, their junior counterparts dropped their first game of the season due to forfeiture in favor of the CIT Wildkittens. The reason was because coach Delfin Pepito Jr. didn't know their schedule.

In the other juniors match, the USPF Baby Panthers salvaged a precarious 69-64 win over the USJ-R Baby Jaguars.

Joshua Corcilles and Rommel Diapera served as the one-two punch for the Baby Panthers as they tallied 20 and 19 points, respectively. (THE FREEMAN)
