One dead, two injured in Danao road mishaps

CEBU, Philippines - A woman died while two others were injured in separate vehicular accidents in Danao City last Friday.

In Quarry, Barangay Looc, Mercy Juntilla was driving her motorcycle home around 5pm when she was hit by a jeep that was reportedly trying to overtake her. Because of the impact, Juntilla was thrown off her motocycle and landed on the pavement head first.

Responding policemen rushed Juntilla to the Danao District Hospital, but the victim had to be transferred to a hospital in Cebu City owing to the seriousness of her condition. Her condition remained critical until she passed away.

Police are now validating the information from witnesses, as there are reportedly several versions of the incident.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Suba, a Suzuki motorcycle rammed into a Mitsubishi van at a corner of PG Almendras Street.

Fifteen-year-old Joseph Cambaya who was riding the motorcycle sustained injuries when he was thrown off the vehicle. Cambaya was sitting in front of the driver, Raymond Diola, while three other people were riding in pilion. Diola and the three backriders were safe.

Charlita Montecillo, 57, wife of Raymond Montecillo, the driver of the van, also injured her arm following the impact of the collission. Other members of the Montecillo family were also inside the van at that time.

Cambaya and Montecillo were brought to the Danao District Hospital, but Cambaya had to be transferred later to a hospital in Cebu City for further medication.

Police said the Montecillo family is not filing charges. In fact, they gave money to Cambaya’s family for the child’s medication.

Police, however, are filing a case against Diola after they found out that everyone on board the motorcycle were not wearing helmets and that the motorcycle had an expired registration.

Both vehicles are temporarily impounded at Danao Traffic office pending investigation. — (FREEMAN)
