PB to monitor “lewd” shows

-

The Cebu Provincial Board plans to create a monitoring team to oversee all fashion shows in various towns following a Boljoon bikini show that offended Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Board Member Agnes Magpale, chairwoman of the PB committee on women, family and minors, yesterday said the incident may have violated Section 5 of the Provincial Ordinance on Women Development Code of Cebu.

Section 5 of the ordinance states that “beauty contests which tend to commodity, abuse, humiliate and treat women as sex objects shall be strictly prohibited in schools, communities, barangays and the Province of Cebu in its celebration.

Last Friday, Boljoon had its annual fiesta in honor of Nuestra Sra. Dela Santa Maria. Prior to the celebration, a supposed fashion of “indigenous attire” was held.

But the show turned out to be a bikini open competition. Annoyed by what she witnessed, the governor walked out of the show.

“I was totally scandalized beyond belief,” Garcia later told reporters, as she expected to see the town showing off its indigenous costumes.

Another thing that irked her was that there were many minors watching the show.

“That was totally immoral, cheap and disrespectful to the significant of their fiesta.  I was very angry with what happened,” she further said.

Magpale agreed with the governor, saying that there is indeed a need for them to form a monitoring team to watch over shows in various towns in the province.

During her regular press conference yesterday, Garcia announced that she will no longer extend financial assistance to various towns for their socio-cultural presentation if they will not specify what show they will put on.

The governor wants all municipalities to adopt decent shows. She gave as an example the way Danao City chose its fiesta queen every time the town celebrates its annual Karansa Festival.

Garcia said she did not want to degrade Cebuano values through scandalous shows. She said she was “totally frustrated” after attending the show since Boljoon is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditions.  Gerome M. Dalipe/BRP
