Notable ship collisions in RP

• 1987 - Ferry Doña Paz collides with an oil tanker off the island of Mindoro, killing more than 4,000 people considered as the world's worst peacetime maritime disaster.

On December 19, 1987, motor tanker MT Victor left Limay, Bataan at about 8:00 pm, en route to Masbate, loaded with 8,800 barrels of petroleum products. On December 20, 1987, at about 6:30 am, the passenger ship MV Doña Paz left the port of Tacloban headed for Manila with 59 crew members including the master and his officers, and passengers totaling 1,493 as indicated in the Coast Guard Clearance. At about 10:30 pm of December 20, the two vessels collided in the open sea within the vicinity of Dumali Point between Marinduque and Oriental Mindoro. All the crewmembers of MV Doña Paz died, while the two survivors from MT Vector claimed that they were sleeping at the time of the incident.

• 1998 - Ferry Cebu City collides with Singaporean tanker off Manila Bay, leaving more than 140 dead or missing.

This collision at the mouth of the Manila Bay happened on December 2, 1998, when the MV Cebu City struck the MV Kota Suria, a Singaporean tanker, resulting in the death of 73 people. Forty-one people were declared missing then.

• 2003 - Ferry San Nicolas rams into SuperFerry 12

In bad weather, 28 people, including a boy, were killed when a wooden-hulled passenger ship from Palawan province collided with a steel-hulled passenger ship bound for Cebu at the mouth of Manila Bay at 11:11 am of May 25, 2003. The fatalities were all passengers of the wooden-hulled MV San Nicolas which sank after it collided with WG&A shipping lines' Super Ferry 12 about one nautical mile northwest of Limbones island, off Cavite province and not far from Corregidor island.
