Priorities and a tow truck that ought to be towed

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The authorities continue to eagerly apprehend those vehicles using the now very infamous 'wang-wang' and also those with fog lamps, but we hope they focus on more important things beyond these devices that are not really abused in Cebu unlike Manila.

If our policemen would do patrols in the evening, they would probably be able to prevent many accidents if they apprehend those vehicles without tail lights or have missing headlights, which are more numerous than those with sirens and fog lamps.

There are also those drivers, who don't seem to bother about traffic rules when it gets dark and we're sure they would hesitate to do their daredevil acts if they know that there are policemen around.

A big problem will however be on the many government vehicles that are not fit to be operated on the road. We don't have to expound on that and we hope that there would be more checks to see if the vehicles owned by the government pass the standards for road worthiness.

This rainy season, it is important that vehicles have all the needed lights, especially tail lights, to help make them visible.

If the intention of the police and other traffic bodies is to make the roads safer, the 'wang-wangs' and the fog lamps are the least of their concern.

We received email from a reader last week, which we are reprinting so that our people at CITOM can act on this.

Here it is:

I write this out of sheer frustration at the quality of people we have here.

Just on my way home, I pass through the street of Sacred Heart Girls leading to Cebu Doc and right beside the small chapel area, near Alejandros is a small eatery where a One Stop Citom Towing truck was parked - right smack in front of a NO PARKING sign, warning that violators would be towed away. And they were all there, eating merrily away and all in blue towing uniform t-shirts identifying themselves as Citom contractors.

And they tow other cars in that area without hesitation.

I don't care if there's no one to police these types of police, but the least they can do is not to flaunt their arrogance.

It's really true - this country is populated with people, given just even a bit of power, will be so arrogant to the point of megalomania. What are we in power for? Ika nga.

This incident happened last Friday, July 30 around 4 p.m.

Maybe Chairman Jack Jakosalem can look into this.
