Makati fire leaves 2 seniors dead

MANILA, Philippines — A an elderly couple, aged 69 and 70, died after a fire razed a residential area in Barangay Tejeros in Makati early yesterday, Mayor Nancy Binay confirmed.
Binay said the blaze, which reached third alarm, also left six people injured and over 230 families displaced.
Fire investigator Jomhar Tuburan said the elderly couple was left behind when people evacuated their houses.
“The man was already bedridden. That is probably why they (couple) were left behind,” Tuburan told reporters.
According to Tuburan, the blaze was not immediately reported to the Bureau of Fire Protection and that it was the Makati police that alerted the BFP about the incident, almost an hour later.
“The incident occurred before 1 a.m. but was only reported to BFP-Makati at 1:54 a.m.,” Tuburan said. “Police thought there was just an altercation, but a fire was already underway.”
Arson investigators are looking at the possibility that the blaze could have started at a house where a family used candles at night.
Binay said the displaced families are now staying at Carmona Community Center, where she supervised the setting up of a temporary evacuation facility.
