Unemployment declines, underemployment up in April

MANILA, Philippines — The proportion of unemployed Filipinos slightly dropped in April, the government reported on Tuesday.

Unemployment rate in April was at 5.5 percent, below the 5.7 percent recorded in the same month last year.

The latest figure was equivalent to 2.36 million jobless Filipinos, lower than the 2.44 million registered a year ago.

Among regions, Ilocos Region (7.3 percent), CALABARZON (6.6 percent), and the National Capital Region (6.4 percent) posted the highest unemployment rates.

Meanwhile, employment rate in April rose to 94.5 percent or 40.9 million, higher than the 94.3 percent or 40.3 million in the comparable period last year.

Workers in the services sector comprised the largest proportion of the population who are employed at 56.4 percent.

On the flipside, underemployment—which the government defines as the proportion of those already working but still seeking for more work or longer working hours—jumped to 17.0 percent or 6.9 million in April from 16.1 percent or 6.4 million a year ago.

Overall, the country’s labor force participation stood at 60.9 percent as of April, above the 61.4 percent logged last year.
