Codilla racks up 3 Cebuana net titles
MANILA, Philippines - Surigao City native Vaughn Codilla captured two singles titles and added a doubles plum to dominate the Cabadbaran City leg of the Cebuana Lhuillier Age Group Tennis Championship Series in Agusan del Norte recently.
Codilla swept Emmanuel Pedrosa, 6-3, 6-2, to cop the 16-and-under title then disposed of another local bet Prince Lastimosa, 6-2, 7-5, for the 18-U plum. He later teamed up with 14-U champion Rupert Tortal to beat Kenichiro Suzuki and Mark Malinis, 8-5, for the 18-U doubles title.
Other winners in the tournament backed by Dunlop as the official ball were Winona Cabardo, who ripped Nanani Suzuki, 6-1, 6-0, for the girls’ 16-U title, and Yra Monteclaro, who crushed Angela Buyante, 6-4, 6-1, for the girls’ 14-U diadem.
“We are happy that we are seeing some new faces as winners even as familiar names continue to hone their games in this age group series,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, president/CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier.
In other results, Mary Calma took the girls’ 18-U plum with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Singcol; Vasey Padilla, who pocketed the girls’ 12-U crown with a 6-2, 6-0 romp over Buyante; Christian Padilla, a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Dave Hortado in the boys’ 12-U finals; and 10-unisex champion Kian Sanches, who repulsed Al-Rasheed Lucman, 2-4, 4-1, 5-3.
Lucman also emerged a double winner as he partnered with Chauncey Aguanta to turn back Steffi Aludo and Dongrey Padilla, 2-4, 4-2, 4-1 for the unisex doubles title, while Vince Serna and John Ramirez routed Andre Tapales and Rupert Regie Tortal, 8-1, for the boys’ 14-U crown.
