Yulo cops pro plum; Tiu season best
MANILA, Philippines - Newcomer EG Yulo pulled off a shock win even as defending champion Jonathan Tiu of JCT Racing capped another big season with a victory in Quick 8 of the National Drag Racing Championships Northern Series at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga recently.
Yulo surprised the field and the crowd as he upstaged top favorite Ryan Quimpo in their final run to snare the premier M&H Pro class plum in this series sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by M&H, Aguila Auto Glass, BG Power Stroke and Sparco.
Tiu, on the other hand, clocked 9.14 seconds to beat Danes Sarmiento who timed 10.461 seconds for the Overall Quick 8 plum with 45 points.
Sel Yulo took third place.
Yulo actually beat Quimpo twice – in the quarterfinals that dropped the latter to the losers’ circle – and in the finals.
Quimpo bounced back in the losers’ side by topping the second chance round, warding off Angelo Chua to seal a title showdown with Yulo.
But Yulo reasserted his mastery over Quimpo as he clocked 11.599 seconds to notch his lone win this season. Quimpo timed 12.935 seconds while Chua finished third.
Despite the runner-up finish, Quimpo still took the Northern Series M&H Pro crown with a total of 26 points while Yulo shared overall runner-up with Aaron Lao with 16 points.
