Mighty 5 rips Korea, shares lead with Iran

Nelson Beltran - The Philippine Star

TAIPEI – Team Mighty Sports Apparels played better than in its previous game, crushing the Korean national team, 86-65, for its second straight win in the 38th Jones Cup international basketball tournament at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium here last night.

Al Thornton, a six-year NBA veteran who once erupted for 69 points with NLEX in the PBA, took his turn to lead the Phl side, drilling in 24 points after a mediocre five-point outing in their 89-81 victory over the home team the previous night.

Zach Graham, Dewarick Spencer, Vernon Macklin, Troy Gillenwater, Michael Singletary and Hamady N’Diaye dished out steady games while Jason Brickman and TY Tang played quality minutes at the point as the Mighty Sports cagers lined themselves up for a shot at win No. 3 versus Sacramento State at 5 p.m. today.

Titleholder Iran kept in step with Mighty Sports with a 70-59 drubbing of the Sacramento State Hornets.

Japan stayed right behind the Phl and Iranian squads at 2-1 after waylaying Egypt, 71-66.

The Koreans fell to 1-2 as they failed to keep up with the Mighty Sports squad featuring two KBL star imports in Spencer and Gillenwater.

“I have a good idea about Korea, but before the game, I did ask Troy and D (Dewarick) about some of the guys they’ve played against in Korea, their tendencies and how do they play as a whole,” said Mighty Sports coach Bo Perasol.

“Because of the nature of the tourney, there’s really nothing particular that we prepared for Korea. We just made sure to identify their main scorers. We’re more concerned on what we’re doing,” Perasol added.

The Mighty quintet opened a 15-point spread midway through the second period and stayed in full control to the finish.

The scores:

Mighty Sports 86 – Thornton 24, Graham 13, Spencer 12, Macklin 9, Gillenwater 9, Singletary 7, Brickman 5, N’Diaye 4, Tang 3, Teng 0, Avenido 0.

Korea 65 – Heo 11, Kim 11, Lee SH. 11, Heo U. 10, Byun 9, Kim 4, Kim SY. 4, Heo H. 3, Kang 2, Lee 0, Choi Ju. 0, Choi Ji. 0.

Quarterscores: 22-18, 45-31, 59-45, 86-65
