MANILA, Philippines - Joseph Sedurifa dished out a double-double game of 32 points and 12 rebounds as Café France held off Bread Story-LPU, 88-74, to firm up its hold of third place in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Ynares Arena in Pasig City yesterday.
The Bakers used a strong first quarter charge to seize control then recovered from a third quarter meltdown with a big run in the fourth to beat the Pirates and stay behind unbeaten Hapee (7-0) and Cagayan Valley (6-0) with a 6-2 card.
Rodrigue Ebondo (13 points) and Maverick Ahanmisi (12 points) backed up Sedurifa with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as the Bakers bounced back from their 15-point loss to the Fresh Fighters last Monday.
“I guess this victory enhances our chance for a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals,” said Café France coach Egay Macaraya.
The 6-2 Sedurifa, who won the MVP in the 2013 NAASCU, sizzled in the first quarter, knocking down shots after shots for 17 points to power Café France to a 30-16 bulge after 10 minutes.
“He’s really a consistent. But we normally used him for his defensive prowess. His offense is just a bonus for us,” Macaraya said.
Anglo Gabayni finished with 19 points for Bread Story, which outscored Café France, 25-16 in the third to pull even at 62. But the Pirates failed to match the Bakers’ fiery run in the fourth and dropped to 2-6.
Aljon Mariano shot 21points and helped Tanduay Light to a 70-57 romp against Racal Motors in the other game.
Mariano went three of six from the field and made all this first five free throws for 12 points as the Rhum Masters led by as many as 17 points late in the period.
