5 killed in Basilan clan war

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Five persons were killed in a gunfight between warring clans in Sumisip, Basilan on Wednesday.

The Basilan police identified the fatalities as Illan Manisan and Serny Julti of the Abdulmuin group and Immah Abubakar, Antotong Ismael and Kasim Talhata of the Alih clan.

Police said the clash occurred in Sitio Langaray in Barangay Manual at around 7:40 a.m.

Sumisip Mayor Gulam Boy Hataman said some residents were forced to leave their homes for fear of being caught in the crossfire.

Hataman said the families have been involved in a dispute over lands and properties.
