Alvarez lists death penalty as major Congress accomplishment

MANILA, Philippines — Despite the controversy around the proposed law, Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez highlighted the approval of House Bill 4727 or the reinstatement of the death penalty as one of the major accomplishments of the House of Representatives in the first year of the Duterte administration.
In his speech during the opening of the second regular session of the 17th Congress, Alvarez commended Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali, chair of the House Justice committee.
"We have also succeeded in steering the return of the death penalty for certain heinous crimes. Let us recognize the hard work of Rep. Reynaldo Umali for making this possible," Alvarez said.

Last March 7, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading the bill restoring capital punishment in the country.
Voting 216-54-1, the lawmakers approved the bill imposing
death penalty on drug-related crimes and offenses.
Alvarez stressed that the House passed 210 legislative measures during the first regular session of the 17th Congress.
He also noted that the lower chamber passed the 2017 national budget "in record time." For the past year, the House also passed the tax reform bill and enacted Republic Act 10927 which amends the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
