Duterte: I find extra adulation corny

Philstar.com
MANILA, Philippines — Presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said that he finds the extra glorification and adulation he gets “corny.”

He said that he even discourages his fanatics, saying that it gives him goose bumps and that it doesn’t fit his paradigm.

Simple living has been central to Duterte’s narrative. Earlier, he even said that he would have a simple oath-taking with homeless people in Metro Manila as guests instead of foreign diplomats — veering away from the traditionally extravagant presidential inauguration.

“Nakokornihan ako. So I just don’t want it. Hindi ko type 'yan. Kayong mga media sa Davao alam ninyo 'yan... I hate it. 'Yung lahat halos mag-bow bow. Nakokornihan ako para bang: ‘itong **** na ito.’”

The Davao City mayor has remained popular getting high poll numbers even after allegations of having secret bank accounts and properties undeclared in his statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth were thrown against him.

Duterte, who said he prefers to be called “mayor” than president, said that he would have wanted that nobody pays attention to his presence. But added that this is impossible now that he is about to assume the highest post in the country.

He said that the country is a democracy and not a monarchy.

“Even if I am your president, I would just consider me equal to you in terms of rights and responsibilities,” he said.
