Del Mar seeks House recognition for Vidal

CEBU, Philippines – Cebu City North District Rep. Rachel Marguerite del Mar has filed a resolution before the House of Representatives seeking to recognize retired Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal.

Del Mar has authored resolution no. 593 asking the House leadership to give recognition to Vidal for "providing spiritual leadership and inspiration, helping the community avert or survive several crisis and conflicts, often acting as peacekeeper and giving the voice of moderation amid clashing views and interests in local and national issues."

"Cardinal Vidal stood out as a spiritual leader in community and country, not only providing comfort and inspiration in times of distress and affliction but also mediating in conflicts that threatened to divide us people," the proposed resolution read.

Del Mar said Vidal always intercedes in conflicts such as military coups, labor disputes, eviction of squatters and vendors, political clashes and threats of injustice.

She believes that that Vidal's intercession during conflicts has avoided bloodshed and brought peace by persuading opposing parties to agree on peaceful options and alternatives.

"During his watch, the Archdiocese has helped the poor and the oppressed, spreading the concept of stewardship among priests and bishops and significantly, among the faithful, reminding clergy and laity that earthly possessions are being held merely in trust by keepers and must be used to help the less fortunate," the resolution added.

Del Mar commended Vidal for valuing the heritage of the Cebu community and its people by preserving the churches, rectories and other edifices of the Archdiocese teaching the value of preserving the culture.

Last month, Pope Benedict XVI has finally accepted Vidal's resignation and named Archbishop Jose Palma of Palo, Leyte as his successor.

Vidal has first submitted his resignation to the Pope in February of 2006 when he turned 75 years-old which is the retirement age for priests as provided in the Code of Canon Law. Palma will formally assume on January 13, 2011. (FREEMAN)
