City registrar’s building ready for occupancy

CEBU, Philippines - The Office of the Civil Registrar in Cebu City will no longer be sharing offices with the City Health Department after its P30 million building is now ready for occupancy.

City registrar Evangeline Abatayo said the construction of the building was a “dream come true” for the City of Cebu and its constituents after four years of waiting.

“It has been our vision to have its own building housing the civil registry records of city, which was quartered in a section of the city health department building pressed for space and identity,” she said.

The P20 million of the budget for the construction was charged to the 2010 Supplemental Budget while the remaining P10 million was taken from the 2013 budget. The building is located at the back of the City Health Department at General Maxilom Avenue Extension.

The new building is spacious and equipped with the complete facilities including air-conditioning units, flat-screened computers, cozy offices, and waiting area.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said during yesterday’s blessing ceremony that he envisioned a well-equipped building for the Civil Registry Office that will house all its sections.

A civil register is established for recording the civil status of persons, in which shall be entered; births, deaths, marriages, annulments of marriages, divorces, legitimations, adoptions, acknowledgment of natural children, naturalization, and changes of name, as stipulated under Section 1 of Commonwealth Act No.3753 or the law on registry of civil status.
