Mapua, JRC, NU unbeaten in Freego

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Mapua, Jose Rizal University and National University disposed of their respective rivals to remain tied for the lead with two victories in the 10th Freego Cup at the Buddhacare gym in Quezon City recently.

The Red Robins drew 19 points from Clint Escamis as they smothered the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws, 79-48, in a showdown of champion teams from NCAA and UAAP, respectively.

The Baby Tams, who stunned the heavily favored NU Bullpups last February, sorely missed the services of several key players as the coaching staff opted to use its second unit to prepare them for the coming UAAP season.

Toby Agustin led JRU’s charge to upend defending champion Chiang Kai Shek College, 78-73, while the Bullpups outlasted La Salle Greenhills, 86-82, in the event backed by Smart, Powerhouse and Home Depot.

University of Santo Tomas, meanwhile, pulled off a thrilling 85-81 win over Lyceum with Gian Benzonan and Val Fornillos combining for 42 points.

Despite missing all but one of his 10 tries from the three-point zone, Agustin still finished with 20 points while four other teammates scored 10 points or more.
