VP Binay gets flak over 'epal' manner in relief distribution

Jennifer P. Rendon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay has been receiving criticisms over alleged "electioneering" in typhoon-devastated areas where he visited.

In Iloilo province, also one of the Yolanda-hit provinces, Binay's labeled relief goods bags have been surfacing online, where netizens tagged it as an "epal" move on the part of the vice president.

In Visayas Singko's Facebook post, Binay was photographed with Senator Nancy Binay and Passi City Mayor Jesry Palmares while doing a ceremonial distribution of relief goods. A tarpaulin also greeted the area where Binay held his relief goods distribution.

The plastic containing common seven canned goods, several packs of noodles, vitamins, and biscuits, has Binay's name on it. The FB post was quickly shared, eliciting comments from many netizens, describing the gesture as an act of electioneering, and that if the help is sincere then there is no need to broadcast it.

A certain Romelyn asked why the need to put a sticker on relief bags unless if the money used directly came from the vice president's pocket.

Scores have also made unkind statements on Binay's visit in Iloilo and Capiz provinces. But a few netizens commented that people should just be thankful if they received aid from politicians, Binay included. (FREEMAN)
