For the Two Dictators' Fanatics

READER'S VIEWS - The Freeman

As of this writing, the two dictators are on the top of the survey for the positions, president and vice president of our country. As the presidential dictator's ratings continue to surge, I could not just help myself but laugh as his political rivals intensified in lashing him with his "dark" side of extrajudicial killings. Besides, it is the only major thing that they can hardly throw at him aside from his being pervert and their awful claim of a disadvantageous side of his federalism advocacy.

All of  them are Manila-based which means they are far from Davao City where he served as mayor for more than 20 years, and at the same time, the jurisdiction of  the dreaded Davao Death Squad (DDS). Many of the young people who are eligible to vote support him for this. Did they say that the members of the DDS killed criminals out of  "mere suspicion"? If  that is so, it would be so untrue of that dictator to claim that he has killed 1,700 outlaws. That's too few for two decades of the terror's reign. It should have climbed up to 17,000. Why did I say that? I did not have to be a statistician to make an estimate that is close to what could have actually happened the other way around, because the DDS secures strong evidences before assassinating their targets. They don't know this because while the killings took place one of them was still busy pocketing the people's money, another was still doing his pathetic gimmicks to make him appealing to be the righteous president, while that lady senator was still testing the waters of Philippine politics.

I learned that one reason why this vice presidential dictator (Ehem, I mean, "probable" dictator) topped the survey is the clamor of  the Digital Age – this young generation where I belong – for a disciplined society. Again, the heat is on for the opposition that aimed to stop another man from reviving the horrors of the Martial Law.

Some accused the Digital Age youths of lacking awareness because they were already born when Martial Law was no longer existent. A proof  is an article by one columnist wherein he criticized people of my generation with the same reason of being ignorant to what really happened during the Marcos regime and showing us of our immaturity in choosing a leader because of our being youth.

While I will not vote for this probable dictator, as I am just as freedom-loving as those victims of the Martial Law atrocities, I will proudly defend the opinion of my fellow young people. Thirty years had passed when the Filipino people waged a peaceful war to end tyranny. Many of its leaders proclaimed the ideal of a better government for the better life of the Filipinos. This may be an exaggerated one but I think what Mr. Marcos stole from the people is only less than one percent compared to what our leaders of today took from us from 1986 until this time. And take note that many of them were the same people who fought for our independence from tyranny and corruption, promising us of a better life. Thirty years is a very, very long time to reform our country.

But where are we now? We're still living in the formula: Marcos regime minus Martial Law plus corruption raise to the power of nth. So do not blame the Digital Age. Blame our today's politicians who got to live during the darkest days of our country.

As you can see, many young people support the two dictators. The reason? Discipline. They are so fed up with the chaos prevailing in our society today. These dictators may or may not be the answer to their question on who can make this nation a progressive and disciplined one. They can even turn out to be the other way around and disappoint the young people who looked up to them. They might even be the worst leaders we could have. But still, the underlying message of the clamor is the hope that the young people of today have.
