‘Why commend police for 1 karera machine?’

Gabriel Bonjoc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – A measure that seeks to commend policemen in Talisay City for recently confiscating an illegal gambling machine was met with stern criticism from a city official.

City Councilor Dennis Basillote questioned the proposal, saying despite the catch, policemen in the city have failed to tone down the rampant illegal activities or done anything of magnitude that would merit such acclaim.

City Councilor Edward Alesna, chairman of the Committee on Peace and Order, introduced earlier this week a resolution commending the Talisay City Police led by Supt. Germano Mallari following the recent confiscation of one video-karera machine in Barangay Tanke.

But Basillote extended his opposition to the passage of the resolution, saying it is really the duty of police officers to confiscate illegal gambling machines and stop other illegal activities.

He said there was nothing unusual with the confiscation. In fact, he said, eight police officers seized just one video-karera machine.

"Nganong ato man na silang pasidunggan nga trabaho man na nila. Wa man gani sila makasumpo sa sugal ug drugas sa Dumlog nga nagkagrabe na (Why do we have to commend them when it's their job in the first place? They have not even addressed illegal gambling and drugs in Dumlog which are getting worse)," Basillote said during the City Council's regular session last week.

Basillote is a resident of Barangay Dumlog and served three terms there as a barangay captain. His son attempted to succeed him but lost in the previous elections.

For his part, Mallari admitted that it is indeed their job to eradicate illegal activities. The giving of commendation, he said, now depends on how local legislators would weigh their accomplishments to boost their morale.

The police chief also confessed that Talisay City has a big problem on illegal drugs and other illegal activities.

He even likened Talisay's criminality problem to that of Cebu City, yet he said they have only few personnel to help them in their campaign against crimes.

Because of this, Mallari urged Basillote to assist the police in obtaining information that would help identify personalities behind illegal activities.

Meanwhile, Alesna presented his motion to divide the house since there was an opposition of his resolution. He eventually got the approval of the resolution after a 9-2 vote.
