Webmasters whip Jaguars for third win in a row

CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters upended the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 71-63, to stay undefeated in three starts in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 26 basketball tournament on Saturday, September 12, at the Cebu Coliseum.

Ricofer Sordilla charted 16 points, two rebounds and seven assists while Maverick Eligoyo scattered 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Webmasters assumed the solo leadership in college division with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Webmasters trailed by a hairline, 35-36, at the break but flipped the script with an explosive second-second performance where they led by as much as 15 points.

Kirst Ryll Da Silva tossed in 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while El John Lacaya finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal for the Jaguars, who absorbed their second straight loss.

In the other collegiate matchup, UCLM gave coach Dondon Hontiveros his first victory after they tamed the previously unbeaten Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 64-58.

Dan Mitchell Ferraren chalked up 11 points, two rebounds and two assists while Cyrus Ubayubay added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists to help UCLM barge into the win column.

Marty Louisse Sotto also had 10 points with two assists and two steals for UCLM, which seized command early, 23-10, and never looked back to the way to snap their two-game jinx.

UCLM closed the first half with a 41-26 advantage, which they padded to as high 20 points.

Braebon Ali Thompson posted a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds with three rebounds and four steals but his singular ourburst went for naught as the Wildcats went down for the first time after a good 2-0 start.

In high school play, the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles opened their campaign for a historic six-peat with a 61-56 beating of the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers. 

Jibson Gaviola Tan led the Magis Eagles with 14 points and seven boards.

Franklin Kenneth Basa chipped in 11 markers with five rebounds, three assists and three steals while Jacob Gabriel Javelosa and Hionrey Recio contributed 10 points for the double Grand Slam-seeking Magis Eagles.

In the other result, Klent Ovillo fired 22 points with five rebounds, one assist and two steals while Carl Torreon dished out 15 points, two assists and three steals as the UCLM juniors rolled to their second victory in a row with a 69-43 thrashing of the Benedicto College (BC) Baby Cheetahs.
