CEBU, Philippines — Former Cebu City mayor Michael Rama said he would not object nor would have hard feelings towards any of the donors who wish to continue helping with the completion of the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).

Rama during his last term as mayor, solicited from various sectors to gather funds for the CCMC’s completion, as he wanted to use the City Government funds for another important projects.

Some of those who pledged support sent out their donations via the Cebu Medical Society (CMS), which was then headed by Dr. Peter Mancao.

Mancao had also served as CCMC medical director upon the appointment of the former mayor.

In an interview with The Freeman, Mancao said the CMS have already returned all the donations received to the respective donors.

The CMS received a total of ?210-million in donations from various donors.

“Officially, giuli na namo. Wala na, giuli na namo sa mga donors,” Mancao said, addressing persistent rumors that part of the funds was allegedly used by Rama for his re-election campaign.

The amount remained unused due to unresolved legalities, which were left unattended following Rama's sudden suspension and eventual dismissal from office implemented by the Office of the Ombudsman.

In a separate interview, Rama laughed off speculations and denied any misuse of the donations.

He said he never personally benefited from any of the contributions.

“I even told Doc Pete Mancao that if any interest was earned, not even a single centavo should be removed. It should all go to CMS,” Rama said. “Kanindot ra'g ihatag na's akoa ah, ang ending, naa koy kwarta. I never received anything. All went to CMS.”

Earlier, it was reported that Operation Smile experienced flooding in their area of CCMC and had hoped that part of the donations could be used to address the issue.

Rama said that once the hospital’s roof is completed, such flooding should cease.

Despite some issues, Rama said he remained hopeful for the project’s completion.

If a donor wishes to continue donating for CCMC, Rama said to “go ahead” while expressing gratitude to those who supported the project. He also  encouraged others to support the CCMC project.

Incoming Mayor Nestor Archival earlier assured the completion of the CCMC is one of his priorities. — (FREEMAN)
