Gerald, Sam talk fears and contentment

CEBU, Philippines — Championing “modern masculinity”, Gerald Anderson and Sam Milby were recently unveiled as the cover of the second volume of Star Magic’s digital video magazine Flex.

Consisting of four-part videos posted by ABS-CBN Entertainment on their YouTube channel, the first two installments featured interviews with Gerald and Sam where they talked about career achievements and their respective current romances.

During a virtual interview, Gerald said he was excited for viewers to see the interactions between him and his “A Family Affair” co-star.

“Our characters in the teleserye keep fighting each other on-screen, so ibang side ang makikita kung ano kami ni Sam off-screen,” Gerald said. “Looking back, I missed our bond together during shooting. Mas casual and laidback and relaxed kami when we are not shooting scenes.”

Sam, who first broke into the industry in 2005 as a Pinoy Big Brother Season 1 housemate, said he is content with his career and his personal life. “After 16 years in the business, I have been blessed to have work and ‘A Family Affair’ is such a big blessing for me,” Sam said.

“It’s the growth you go through, knowing and accepting mistakes you made and growing from them. Seeking out and waiting to keep growing as a person. That’s what I want to do, kahit 60 or 70 years na ako,” he added.

Gerald echoed similar sentiments, saying one of his “biggest flexes” is being satisfied with both his career and personal affairs, but isn’t resting on his laurels.

“At age 33, there is still motivation to achieve more, but I am also content with my achievements. I am happy with my personal life but I still want to accomplish more things,” he revealed.

They also shared their biggest fears: wasting opportunities that come their way.

“When an opportunity is given to me and I don’t seize the moment, not meeting my potential – that’s my biggest fear,” Gerald admitted.

As for Sam, his greatest fear “would be getting old and having more regrets, rather than the things I can look back to and be happy about the life I lived.”

The Kapamilya actors further revealed how their girlfriends reacted to their sexy scenes with Ivana Alawi in “A Family Affair.”

“I didn’t do anything that feels excessively sexy as long as they are important to the story. If love is not involved in these sexy scenes, I would not do it out of my respect to my partner,” said Gerald, who is dating Julia Barretto.

Sam, who has been making sweet music with Catriona Gray, said, “I am thankful to her for being understanding even though she isn’t an actress in a showbiz sense.”

On what it means to be a modern man in today’s world, Gerald offered, “A man should know his responsibilities. If you did something wrong, own it up and learn from it.”

When asked on his thoughts of when it was inappropriate to flex (slang for boasting or showing off), Sam said, “When you are good at something and you know that person is struggling, don’t purposely outshine them. You hold that back because it’s more respectable not being a showoff.”

Also appearing in the second volume of Star Magic Flex are Star Magic actors Elyson De Dios, Krisof Garcia, and Michael Ver Comaling, who praised Gerald and Sam for their humility.

“I was surprised at how humble they were during our shoot for Flex,” Comaling said.
