Jomary Torres ends ONE win streak, falls to Gaol in Jakarta
JAKARTA, Indonesia — Wary of her foe’s striking prowess, Jomary Torres exclusively leaned on takedown attempts.
That one-dimensional approach proved detrimental to her bid to extend her unbeaten run in ONE Championship as the more-experienced Priscilla Lumban Gaol carved out a unanimous-decision victory top cap off the preliminaries of the “Conquest of Heroes” showpiece Saturday night at the Jakarta Convention Center.
Torres looked tentative as soon as the opening bell rang. Seemingly trying to evade Gaol’s strikes, the Dipolog City native repeatedly attempted to bring the fight on the ground.
Gaol, a Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist in wushu, mounted a commendable showing on the defensive end. She paired it with multiple knees against the Filipina and kept that pace until the final round.
But as the fight stretched to the final salvo, the disparity between the two fighters was clear.
The young Filipina, for her part, was able to consistently get out of Gaol’s clutches during the three-round match.
Torres’ absorbed her first loss after an impressive 3-0 run in ONE Championship.
Gaol, for her part, returns to the win column after Jihin Najihin dealt snapped her three-match win streak last July.
