Pacman, Floyd will fight next year – twice

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Bob Arum is looking at two big fights next year – two big fights between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The chief of Top Rank Promotions said there’s a real big chance for this to happen once the two giant cable networks, HBO and Showtime, come to terms.

“Both networks want this fight to happen. All signs seem to point to the fight happening early next year,” Arum told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Arum had repeatedly said Pacquiao vs Mayweather may finally happen in 2015. The fight could generate as much as $250 million.

He thinks that it should happen next year. Or else, fight fans may no longer care.

“There is a sell-by date, where it becomes ‘Who cares?’” Arum also said in the article that came out of the Chronicle.

Arum was in San Francisco a couple of days ago trying to sell Pacquiao’s next fight against undefeated New Yorker Chris Algieri on Nov. 23 in Macau.

Even when there’s a fight up ahead, questions on the Mayweather bout continues to hound Pacquiao, his chief trainer Freddie Roach and Arum himself.

“It has to happen by the first six months of next year. And if it happens, there should be a provision with a different percentage for the rematch.

“So that the winner is rewarded for winning the fight. I would love to see these guys fight twice next year,” said the 82-year-old promoter.

Mayweather, who is 46-0 inside the ring, will be back in the ring on Sept. 13 to face Marcos Maidana in a rematch. Again, the great American boxer is tipped to prevail.

Mayweather hinted of a “big surprise” for his fans in 2015, and they’re hoping for the Pacquiao fight.

Pacquiao is ready to rumble, saying it’s Mayweather who’s not.

“[He is] not [scared] of fighting, but perhaps of what one night could do to his zero of losses,” Pacquiao told The Star Ledger.
