Pangilinan steals show in Shell active chess
MANILA, Philippines - Stephen Rome Pangilinan, a seven-year-old wonder from Christian Ecclesiastical School in Bulacan, swept the nine-round kiddies side to upstage the FEU-FERN bets’ domination of the juniors division of the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Northern Luzon leg at the Cagayan Colleges in Tuguegarao last Sunday.
Ranked 155th in a field of 194, Pangilinan shocked the field with his solid games, outclassing Heirry Manaloto, third seed Alder Jallorina, top seed Dave Cabida and No. 13 Charles Abuzo in the last four rounds to top the 14-and-under division by 1.5 points.
He also took the eight-year-old-and-under award for the second straight leg and towed another unfancied bet No. 117 Marc Labog of Solano National High School and eighth-ranked Paul Casiano into the grand finals of the event sponsored by Pilipinas Shell.
Vince Medina, on the other hand, scored 2.5 points in the last three rounds to finish with 7.5 points and lead a 1-2-3 finish by FEU-FERN bets in the junior category of the tournament sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Phils.
