UST booters turn back Ateneo side
MANILA, Philippines - Mar Oscar Mungcal handed unbeaten University of Santo Tomas a 1-0 win over host Ateneo De Manila University at the close of the first round of the 72nd UAAP men’s football event at the Erenchun field inside the Ateneo campus over the weekend.
Mungcal outran his defenders and hit the game’s lone goal at the 72nd minute in the left side to give the Golden Booters the lead.
UST successfully threw its defensive blanket the rest of the way to en route to a league-leading 4-0-1 win-loss-draw slate in the two-round event supported by Mizuno and Ateneo De Manila U.
University of the East snapped a four-game losing streak after routing De La Salle University, 5-0, for a 1-4-0 win-loss-draw slate.
De La Salle University dropped to 1-4-0 card while host Ateneo had a 2-3-2 win-loss-draw slate.
Far Eastern University, meanwhile, outlasted reigning champion University of the Philippines, 2-1, to move to second place with a 3-1-1 record. UP dropped to third with a 3-2-0 slate.
In the women’s side at the Ocampo field, FEU took the top spot at the end of first round by nipping UST, 1-0, behind the 43rd minute goal of Frea Fado to give the Lady Tamaraws a 2-0-2 win-loss-draw slate. UST fell to third with 2-1-1 card.
UP ended a three-game losing skid by defeating host Ateneo, 5-0, to improve to 1-3-0. Ateneo slid to 0-3-1 slate.
