NAMFREL opposes BSKE postponement

MANILA, Philippines — Poll watchdog National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) is opposing calls to postpone the 2025 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE).

NAMFREL secretary general Eric Alvia yesterday said elections should be timely and conducted regularly, serving as the cornerstone of democracy.

“Regular elections ensure that the government remains accountable to the people. Delaying elections erodes confidence in the electoral process and democratic institutions,” Alvia said.

He said postponing the BSKE, which is scheduled on Dec. 1, 2025, could be perceived as a tactic to again extend the term of current barangay and SK leaders, and could be tainted with ulterior motives.

“Postponement can create uncertainty, destabilize the political environment and deprive citizens of their right to choose their local leaders or representatives regularly,” he added.

Alvia said the shorter term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials is not a valid reason to warrant a postponement of the elections.

“The capricious practice of postponing the BSKE whenever it is politically expedient should be stopped,” he said.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) earlier said it is allowing Congress to decide whether to postpone the 2025 BSKE.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said the poll body would continue with its preparations unless President Marcos signs a law postponing the electoral exercise.
