Wala ng foreign coach sa ABAP, puro Pinoy na lang

MANILA, Philippines - Matapos ang ilang beses na pagkuha sa serbisyo ng mga Cuban coaches, nagdesisyon ang Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) na umasa na lamang sa mga Filipino mentors.

Ito ang inihayag kahapon ni ABAP executive director Ed Piczon sa lingguhang PSA sports forum na idinaos sa Dining Hall ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) sa Rizal Memorial Sports Complex sa Vito Cruz, Manila.

Isa sa mga naging dahilan ng pagbitaw ng ABAP sa mga Cuban coaches ay ang ‘language barrier’.

“Based on those several factors that we mentioned, I felt that it’s a good opportunity for us to go all-Filipino as far as the coaches are concerned,” ani Piczon.

Ang huling Cuban coaches na kinuha ng boxing association, nasa ilalim nina chairman Manny V. Pangilinan at president Ricky Vargas, ay sina Juan Enrique Steyners Tissert at Dagoberto Rojas Scott.

“Nu’ng manalo si Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr. ng silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, one month before that competition lamang duma-ting si Raul Fernandez Liranza,” sabi ni Piczon. “Ang talagang humubog kay Onyok ay ang mga local coaches natin at hindi si Liranza.”

Sa nakaraang 25th Southeast Asian Games sa Laos, sumuntok ang men’s at women’s team ng kabuuang limang gold, isang silver at tatlong bronze medals.

Tatlo sa limang gintong me-dalya ay mula kina women pugs Annie Albania, Alice Aparri at Josie Gabuco na sinanay nina Filipino mentors Boy Catolico at Roel Velasco.

Hangad ng ABAP na malagpasan ang sinikwat na dalawang gold at dalawang bronze medal sa 2006 Asian Games sa Doha, Qatar para sa 2010 Asian Games sa Guangzhou, China sa Nobyembre.

Sina bantamweight Joan Tipon at flyweight Violito Payla, isa nang retirado, ang sumuntok ng nasabing dalawang ginto ng bansa sa Doha. (Russell Cadayona)
