Mapúan researchers in roster of top Filipino scientists

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Three researchers from Mapúa Institute of Technology are in the roster of the top 200 scientists in the Philippines published recently by a Spanish research firm.

Professors Allan Soriano and Alvin Caparanga of Mapúa’s School of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and the Institute’s executive vice president for academic affairs Dr. Bonifacio Doma Jr. were included among the top scientists in the Philippines, according to their Google Scholar citations.

Compiled by the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group under the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Spain’s largest public research body, the list consists of public profiles of Philippine-based researchers in Google Scholar, a web search engine indexing scholarly works online.

Additionally, Mapúa is in the roster of the top 25 Philippine universities ranked by the same research firm, which took into account the teaching commitment, research results, perceived international prestige, and linkages of the institution.

In 2013, Mapúa president and chief executive Dr. Reynaldo Vea called upon the Mapúa community to push the envelope of knowledge further outward and produce technologies that are useful to the people and beneficial to the institute. In heeding this, the institute delved into the study of membrane technology, biomedical applications of magnetic nanomaterials, and biosorption of metals from waste water, among others.

According to Vea, several organizations were tapped to become partners in membrane technology. Mapúa aims to put up a membrane center with the support of the Department of Science and Technology.

Aside from this, faculty members and researchers are being sent abroad for student and faculty exchanges and post-doctoral degrees. Mapúa has also opened the doors of its research building to returning Ph.D.s and post-doctors to set up and continue their research in the building’s laboratories.

The Institute’s office for International Linkages for Research and Development has been vigorously setting up partnerships with different research institutions and universities globally. These linkages help the research community in Mapúa to foster relations and networks with fellow researchers to conduct joint studies on relevant topics.
