Red Cross brings life support training to schools

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to bring its programs, including basic life support training, to schools nationwide.

PRC chairman Richard Gordon signed partnership agreements with Education Secretary Leonor Briones and CHED officer-in-charge J. Prospero de Vera last Monday to provide life-saving skills to more students and teachers from kindergarten to college.

Under the agreements, schools will have teacher-volunteers who will serve as moderators to promote volunteerism among Filipino youth.

“The PRC, DepEd and CHED shall work together to ensure resilience in education through trainings that equip learners and their teachers and facilitators with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to save more lives and inspire humanitarianism,” said the PRC.

“This partnership intends to bring out the best of children and youth as change agents by becoming lifesavers, lifelines and leaders through the help of their teachers as moderators,” it added.

Red Cross Youth Councils will also be established in colleges and universities.

The PRC said it has already started training of trainers who will serve as pool of advisers that will help facilitate the implementation of the partnership with the schools.
