Feast of Mama Mary’s nativity

PERSPECTIVE - Cherry Ballescas - The Freeman

Yesterday, September 8, was our Mama Mary’s birthday.

Considered as “blessed among women,” she is also celebrated for her inspiring/ complete obedience to God.

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done unto me,”

And because of her yes to God’s will, “the Word was made flesh.”

Mama Mary, you are remembered best and blessed “for the fruit of thine womb, Jesus!”

And for always directing us to God- joyfully/prayerfully, like you did in your Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55):

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for God has looked with favor on the lowliness of the Almighty’s servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is God’s name. God’s mercy is for those who fear God from generation to generation. God has shown strength with God’s arm;

God has scattered the proud in their conceit.

“God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. God has helped servant Israel, in remembrance of God’s mercy, according to the promise God made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

On the feast of your nativity, Mama Mary, we raise to you the pleas of our people, our country, our world.

We recall your Magnificat and ask you please to intercede for us, for God to scatter the proud, for God to cast down the dishonest mighty and powerful from their throne, soonest please?

Please intercede to God for the lowly to be lifted, for the millions of hungry in our land and throughout the world to be filled with good things, and for God to please hurry and send the abusive rich/powerful away empty.

Your Immaculate Heart, Mama Mary, always trusted God and his will.

We will always remember how you beautifully, wonderfully, humbly, obediently allowed your son, Jesus Christ, to take care of the wine and perform his first miracle --his loving response to your request.

In John 2:1-5, “at the wedding in Cana of Galilee, when the wine ran out,” you said to Your Son, Jesus, “they have no wine.”

And Jesus said to you – “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”

Many mothers would have felt disrespected/insulted/ignored with these words, but because of your love, your full faith in God’s love and divine will, you told the servants instead “do whatever he tells you.”

And Jesus’ Miracle at Cana, turning water into wine, will forever be told and retold!

And your beautiful role and response in that miracle narrative, priceless, unforgettable!

We will always remember how you discerned and completely accepted God’s will and plan to save the world through Jesus Christ.

Even when Simeon told you “a sword will pierce your own soul too” and even when you did not understand why Jesus replied to you “why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” when you asked him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you,” instead, you chose and quietly/ silently “treasured/pondered all these things in your heart.”

Let us always treasure, in our hearts/in our life, your constancy/fidelity/obedience to God’s will, to your divine mission, to share Jesus Christ and his salvation to all of humankind.

From your Immaculate Conception to your nativity, your journey with your son Jesus through his birth/crucifixion/Resurrection/Ascension, you have wholeheartedly accepted God’s will and mission because of your great love for him, for his son, and for us all.

Dear Mama Mary, accept our love/gratitude/prayers, now and forever!
