Wife beaters

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Freeman

Reader Ramon Valdezco sent me the following one-liners he picked up from a Manila newspaper: “Headless body of a pretty woman was found dumped in a ditch” and “Coconut for sale 12 pesos per each piece.”

Would you believe that more Filipino women than men justify wife beating by cruel husbands? You got to believe this because a reputable survey says so.

***

The survey was conducted by the UP Population Institute. It was conducted in four of the country’s 10 poorest provinces —Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Ifugao and Eastern Samar.

***

A report in the Phil STAR last Oct. 5 said that women agreed that wife beating is justifiable in one of the following situations:

If the wife hits the husband, if the wife is a nagger, if the wife fails to take care of the children, if the wife refuses to have sex with the husband, if the wife talks back at the husband, or if the wife burns the food.

Commenting on this survey, a neighbor of mine said: “Tinuod gyud diay ang gisulti sa taga-DSWD nga kadaghan sa mga kulatado nga asawa gusto gyud mobalik pakulata sa ilang bana.”

***

He said he had a comadre whose husband broke two of her ribs but insisted in leaving the DSWD’s care because ... “Wa’y moluto’g kan-onon akong bana.”

***

“No more rice importation this year,” says the NFA. A fellow mediaman says: “They say this every year but every year rice by the tons creep in.”

PNoy is being attacked left and right. Gen. Colin Powell, one of America’s modern-day generals, said he welcome attacks like that. “It shows you count.”

OVERHEARD. Three men were heard talking about Pagcor’s conversion into school desks of some old slot machines. One of them said: “At least ang pildi ko sa slot nahaadto sad sa desks sa mga bata.” Said another: “Padayon pagduwa kay daghan pa ra bang school desks ang gikinahanglan.”
