EDITORIAL - Sanchez's latest attack

Cebu Vice Governor Greg Sanchez has found another venue in his continued attacks on Governor Gwendolyn Garcia. Last Thursday, following an explosion of typhoid fever in Alegria town, Sanchez blamed chicken manure as the cause of the outbreak.

He said the Capitol may be blamed if it is proven that chicken manure caused the outbreaks of typhoid fever and diarrhea in Alegria and Danao City respectively, explaining that the provincial government has been distributing chicken manure in different towns and cities in the province.

When the vice governor aired his manure theory, no one raised a hand to believe in his statement. The public knows he is not the proper authority on matters pertaining to diseases and health.

Good thing the Department of Health contradicted his theory, which has no scientific evidence. The DOH said typhoid fever is primarily caused by human waste and not by chicken manure. 

As known to the public, Sanchez is a successful civil engineer, a job that connected him to the people and helped shape his political career. And we cannot expect him to preach the public on the need to practice proper hygiene.

He may be the best engineer around. But he cannot be a medical expert for a simple reason that he has no degree in the medical field.

Yes he has businesses selling health products that earned him the nickname as the king of lacto in the country. But that does not give him the expertise in sanitation and health.

It is better for Sanchez to refrain from commenting on matters that are far beyond his expertise. He should have first consulted the DOH or some other medical experts before plunging into his chicken manure theory.

Cebuanos can only see some political undertones in his comments. They have long been witnessing the political wrangling between the two highest officials in the province, and Sanchez’s latest comments are just nothing but another form of assault against the governor.
