The night House Deputy Speaker and 1-Pacman party-list Rep. Mikee Romero celebrated his golden birthday was the moment he turned most grateful about his life.

There was joy and humility on the face of the richest congressman of the land when he thanked each of his guests at the Conservatory of the Peninsula Manila. His family and closest friends were in attendance.

“My 50th birthday is a reminder for me to be grateful for everything that life has given me. I have a greater appreciation of life and I am now more at peace with myself. I have learned to go through life effortlessly. I am where I’m supposed to be and all the circumstances that happened in my life is for a reason,” he told this writer.

“Before, I tried to be perfect. Now, I have learned to embrace all the imperfections in life,” he added.

“Perfection for me is a state (of mind). It’s a state of being content. I’m very much contented and happy with my family and close friends on my 50th birthday,” he said. “I just want a small and simple get-together. Real friends without any agenda are hardest to find.”

The party was a perfect celebration of Mikee’s golden birthday. His beauteous wife Sheila made sure everything would be a breeze and her handsome husband would just come in as a guest.

“He came in as a guest. I prepared everything for him. I had prior food tasting with my daughter Milka and my sister Sam Bermudez. I made sure that the food was good and the servings were ample. Most of the guests were men,” Sheila said.

On the morning of his birthday, Mikee was on the campaign trail for his last term as a party-list representative. Sheila prays that her husband wins two seats in Congress. “They have been campaigning hard. This is his last term and he still wants to achieve more both in crafting laws that would benefit people,” she said.

“I pampered him with Omakase lunch for his birthday,” she added with a smile.

Sheila wanted to make sure Mikee would be happy during his “golden moment”  so she reached out to her husband’s favorite singers, Bob and Cliff Mofatt, who are part of The Moffats, a Canadian pop/rock/country band, to take part in the celebration. Oh, the joy that registered on Mikee’s face was immeasurable when he saw, on recorded video, the singers performing for him. He was childlike in his admiration for the duo.

And how Mikee swayed to the live performances of singer KZ Tandingan was proof that he was really having the time of his life that night. “I’m a fan of KZ!” he said. “I’ve watched her many performances on YouTube.” He was obviously thrilled to see her perform. The excitement on his face was akin to the happiness of a kid in a candy store.

Excitement and happiness continued to spread across his face when he was surprised to see his son Santi arriving at the party — straight from the airport. He just flew in from the US where he is training for basketball under an NBA coach.

Mikee is always thrilled about life —  just as he is always excited to celebrate life with his family.

“I wish to have more time to enjoy the things I want to do outside of my work. I live a very busy life and I want to enjoy the fruits of my hard work. Likewise, I want to dedicate more time to my family,” he said.

He said his family is “at the center of my life.” They motivate him to work as hard as he can to provide them the best of what life can offer.

“I wish him true joy and peace that comes from Jesus. And may he have a relationship with the Lord that will withstand any challenge that life throws him,” Sheila said.

What more can Mikee Romero ask for in life?

“To grow old with my wife Sheila, our children and their future children,” he concluded.

Happy birthday, my brother Mikee! *
