DPWH starts work on P47 million drainage project in Manila

MANILA, Philippines — To alleviate persistent flooding along major thoroughfares in Manila, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced works on a P47-million underground drainage expansion project along Roxas Boulevard that will double as a floodwater detention basin.
Inspecting the project site between Padre Faura and Remedios streets yesterday, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said workers have started laying two-meter high-capacity drainage pipes across an initial 135-meter stretch.
The DPWH targets to finish the project by year-end.
Dizon said the high-capacity drainage system is designed to serve as an underground detention basin along Roxas Boulevard to store excess stormwater during heavy rainfall.
He said five pumping stations along the Manila Bay shoreline are fully operational.
The DPWH said by expanding the capacity of the feeder drainage conduits along Taft Avenue, Padre Faura, Remedios and Kalaw streets, floodwaters will recede more rapidly from surrounding hospital, academic and commercial zones.
