MANILA, Philippines — The Navotas city government is completing a road dike to provide access for more firefighting equipment to the inactive sanitary landfill that has been on fire since April 10.

“With just about 50 meters left, hopefully, the road dike will be connected to the mainland on Sunday to bring equipment more quickly to the landfill,” Mayor John Rey Tiangco said on social media yesterday.

On Friday, responders conducted dredging and soil cover operations to mitigate the fire within the 41-hectare landfill.

“So far, it has been effective, and fire and smoke have stopped in areas already covered in soil,” Tiangco said.

Bulldozers from the Department of Public Works and Highways and fire trucks from neighboring cities are helping authorities to control the fire.

Air quality index in Barangay NBBS Kaunlaran hit 171 yesterday – a rating classified as “unhealthy” for people, especially those with sensitive conditions.

Tiangco urged vulnerable populations to stay indoors and to wear a mask if they are outside.
