MALOLOS CITY, Philippines — Authorities conducted a forced evacuation on 65 families from Barangay Salambao in Obando town, as thick smoke coming from the burning sanitary landfill in neighboring Navotas City in Metro Manila continued to affect town residents on Saturday night.

Manuel Lukban Jr., Bulacan disaster risk reduction and management officer, told The STAR that as of 4:30 a.m. yesterday, at least 200 people had been brought to the evacuation center at Obando National High School.

The forced evacuation was done after Salambao barangay officials requested the Obando municipal disaster risk reduction and management office, town police and fire personnel to move residents to safety.

Lukban said the second floor of the town’s municipal hall is being prepared as a temporary evacuation center for other residents that may become affected by the smoke from the burning landfill.

He added that provincial risk reduction personnel were placed on standby in case more residents have to be evacuated to safer areas.
