COTABATO CITY , Philippines — An alleged ranking leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) and his female companion were killed in an encounter in T’boli, South Cotabato yesterday morning.

The fatalities – Anthony Narvasa, alleged secretary of the NPA’s Far South Mindanao Region, and his assistant, Rosa Kian – died at the scene of the firefight that occurred in Barangay Laconon, according to Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir Cagara, chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division.

The encounter broke out after Narvasa and his companions allegedly opened fire at a group of soldiers who were responding to complaints  about an extortion activity in the village.

The Army said Narvasa had been wanted for multiple murder, multiple frustrated murder, arson, armed robbery, extortion and illegal drug trafficking.
