Journalist seeks transfer of cyberlibel case to Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — Citing safety concerns, journalist Philip Lustre wants his cyberlibel case transferred from Davao City to Metro Manila.
Lustre’s lawyer Dino de Leon on Wednesday said they are set to file a petition to quash the case.
“We are also filing motions for reinvestigation and transfer of case venue,” De Leon said. “We do not feel safe in Davao City.”
Lustre, 72, was arrested while attending a news forum in Quezon City on Oct. 24 after a Davao court issued a warrant against him for cyberlibel. He was freed after posting bail of P48,000.
The complaint against Lustre was filed by Manases Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a statement, Carpio denied that a “special operation” was conducted against Lustre, adding that it was up to police to decide when to enforce an arrest warrant.
Carpio’s camp said he could not have facilitated Lustre’s arrest because the warrant was dated Oct. 2 and was served only on Oct. 24.
