Villager dead, 2 hurt in Cotabato ambush

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A motorcycle rider was killed while his two companions were wounded in an ambush in Barangay Kibia in Matalam, Cotabato on Saturday, November 29.
Barangay officials and police investigators told reporters on Sunday that the 39-year-old ambush fatality, Renato Labagnao, and his two companions, Antonio Supleo, 22, and the 43-year-old Conrado Cabaya, were riding a motorcycle together, on their way home from a cockpit, when they were attacked by gunmen along the route.
Labagnao died instantly from gunshot wounds sustained in the attack, according to officials of the Matalam Municipal Police Station and the Cotabato Provincial Police Office.
The ambush left Supleo and Cabayao wounded, both transported immediately by emergency responders from the Matalam municipal government to hospital for treatment.
Municipal officials said their attackers managed to escape before responding barangay leaders and volunteer community watchmen could reach the scene.
Col. Jerson Birrey, Cotabato provincial police director, said barangay officials and personnel of the Matalam Municipal Police Station are cooperating in putting closure to the incident.
