MMDA, JICA to carry out second traffic management project

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) formed a partnership to improve traffic conditions in Metro Manila.

According to an MMDA statement, the two agencies launched the implementation of a three-year Capacity Enhancement on Traffic Management with Improvement of Intelligent Transportation Systems in Metropolitan Manila (MMITS) program in Pasig City last week.

“The MMITS seeks to strengthen MMDA’s institutional capacity in planning and implementing intelligent transport system solutions, develop a comprehensive and centralized database to support ITS operations and formulate an ITS masterplan tailored to the needs of Metro Manila,” the statement read.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said the project aims to leverage technology, adopt data-driven solutions and enhance institutional capacities to address traffic challenges while building a more inclusive, resilient and future-ready transportation system for the National Capital Region.

Artes said local government units in Metro Manila and the academe would also be consulted for their inputs.

The MMDA expects the project, the second of its kind, would “contribute significantly to easing traffic congestion, enhancing road safety, improving overall transport efficiency in the region and promoting inclusive mobility.”
